1. invest in Strategic planning & Building a high Functioning Executive Team.
Does your leadership team deeply trust each other? Does it feel like they have each other’s back?
Does your team know how to have vigorous debates without shutting down or shutting off?
Do they excel at fully committing and buying-in to key decisions, even when they don’t agree?
Does your team have a system of accountability to deliver results? Do they agree to clear leadership behaviours so everyone plays nicely in the sandbox?
Are they aligned around a simple and clear strategic plan?
Invest the time in annual and quarterly Strategic Planning
The most effective teams hold annual and quarterly planning as sacred. This approach consistently deepens team trust, and ensures annual and quarterly priorities are clear and moving ahead. We use a One Page Strategic Planning approach to ensure both the goals are crystal clear, and to ensure the team has clarity around who is responsible for making each goal happen. The one-page plan gives us a tool to hold the team accountable for results. Everyone knows what they are responsible for no ambiguity. We regroup quarterly with a focus on five things.
how Is the leadership team doing?
What key topics/issues need to be discussed?
how did we do this past quarter?
what adjustments are necessary in the upcoming quarter?
are the future goals clear?
2. executive coaching
For years, athletes and executives alike have leveraged outside counsel to excel. Stepping into the C-suite is a far bigger and more comprehensive leap than most leaders realize. It’s not just subtle change that is required, it’s complete transformation. Outside counsel is not only recommended, but essential, because it’s lonely at the top and the feedback, friendships and development insights stop coming.Going it alone is not recommended. Having a confidante outside the organization is a game-changer. I have been a CEO and Executive coach and confidante for over 20 years. My clients have called me when they are in a career crisis or at an organizational inflection point. They have called when they have received unsolicited requests to buy their business or when their confidence has been rocked. They have called when they need an unbiased ear as they work through their toughest decisions or navigating a new challenge with their boards. They have called when they have faced challenges like covid and tariffs and constant macro chaos and disruption, to talk through ideas and opportunities. Bottom line: a great coach is a sounding board, a strategist, a counsellor, a partner. An essential part of your leadership team.
